More About Angola
The
last 500 years for Angola have not been pretty, but things are
improving. With luck and a little less corruption Angola will soon be
showcasing its cool coastline, raw interior and chaotic culture to the
rest of the world.
Angola
has more than 1600 km of beautiful Atlantic coastline, mountains in the
central provinces and rich rainforest in the north. The countryside is
green and fertile, with many rivers and even more minerals.
A combination of land mines, bored soldiers taking pot shots at elephants and hungry
soldiers shooting anything else with four legs has meant Angola’s
wildlife was massively depleted over the last quarter-century or so.
But the situation is improving. Recently the national animal, the
palanca neger - giant sable - was spotted, and efforts to reintroduce
animals into national parks are ongoing. Angola’s coastline is the
second-richest fishing zoned in the world, though that’s also a
problem, as masses of huge foreign fishing boats pay to enter and
pillage the crucial breeding areas.
