More About Burundi

Back on the map after a long civil war, Burundi’s small size hides some surprises, including a freewheeling capital, brochure-worthy beaches and haunting landscapes.

Rwanda may be the land of a thousand hills, but Burundi is not far behind. The north is a stunning landscape of dramatic peaks and deep valley, best experienced on the bus between Bujumbura and Kigali. To the southwest, it levels out along the shores of lovely Lake Tanganyika, home to fishing villages and blissful beaches.

Choose from majestic mountains in the north and glorious beaches in the south on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Many of the mountains are carved with gravity-defying terraces all the way down to the deep valleys below; on which farmers somehow eke out living.

About 84 percent of population is Hutu, about 14 percent are Tutsi, and just one percent is Twa Pygmy. The new government is a delicate balance of Hutu and Tutsi, and is attempting to govern for all Burundians, rather than solely for the interests of one ethnic group or another.
