Giza
Giza is a town in Egypt on the west bank of the River Nile, 20 kilometres southwest of central Cairo. Giza is now part of the greater Cairo metropolis and the capital of the Al-Jizah Governorate. It is located near the northeast border of this governorate, which is located right on the banks of the River Nile. Its estimated population is 2,700,000 according to 2006 national census, and the governorate has 4,800,000.
Giza is famous for the Giza Plateau; the site of some of the most majestic ancient monuments in the world, including sacred structures , the Great Pyramid of Giza, a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary, the Great Sphinx, , and several other large temples and pyramids.
The Great Pyramid was once the location for the Prime Meridian, which is a reference point used for determining a base longitude.
