Details / Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Upper Egypt, Luxor, where tombs were constructed for the powerful nobles and kings of the Kingdom. The valley stands on the west bank of the River Nile, across from the city of Luxor, within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The region consists of two valleys, East Valley and West Valley.
The valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers and was the most important burial place of the royal figures of the Kingdom, together with those of several privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes of funerary rituals of the period. All of the tombs seem to have been robbed, but they still give an idea of the power of the rulers of that time.
The site became a World Heritage Site in 1979, along with the rest of the Theban. Exploration, excavation and conservation continue in the valley and it is one of the most favourite tourist destinations in the world.
