Details / Green Square
Scour an aged, pre-revolution map of Tripoli and you are most probably to find yourself a little bewildered. That is because Green Square - the heart of central Tripoli where the city meets the traffic-filled streets of contemporary Tripoli - was just carved out after the 1969 revolution. Until then, the plaza was about half of its present size and its northeastern boundary was the sea front - in the 1970s, around 500 meters of land was reclaimed to relieve constant traffic jamming.
In its early days, Green Square was mainly for mass rallies in support of the uprising, and while it still serves this function, it more often serves as a car park or fairground during civic holidays. Floodlit by nighttime, always full of activity by day and just as often known as Martyrs' Square, you are possibly to pass through here time and over again.
