Details / Diourbel Region
![]() |
This region includes the Groundnut Basin and more recently colonized agricultural lands to the south and east. The Groundnut Basin is Senegal’s commercial agricultural centre. It is an area of interior dunes with level or slightly undulating topography.
Diourbel is a region of Senegal. The provincial capital is the city of Diourbel. The region corresponds approximately to the pre-colonial kingdom of Bawol and is still called by that name. Residents of the area are called Bawol-Bawol.
Woodlands that once covered the area have been replaced completely with a tree parkland dominated by acacias. The region has higher rainfall and a longer growing season than most of the Groundnut Basin, but it lacks the heavy mantle of sand characteristics of the region’ best peanut-growing areas.
