![]() |
Just north of Hout Bay, the remarkable World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary is presently the largest bird sanctuary in Africa and the second largest in the world.
The high, landscaped, walkthrough aviaries feature 450 bird species. Around 3,000 individual birds are kept in the sanctuary fro rehabilitation purposes, many of them brought in injured. Others are endangered species which are introduced for a captive breeding programme. Wherever possible, birds are released into their natural habitat again once they are fit to survive.
Visitors can watch them feed, build nests and incubate their eggs. The World of Birds also plays an important secondary role in educating the public on conservation and other environmental matters.
Rare primates can also be seen at the sanctuary, among these the endangered pygmy marmoset and Geoffrey’s tufted-ear marmoset.
