Details / Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve
![]() |
In a region where population densities are high and where sugar cane plantations and coastal resort developments have replaced most of the natural vegetation, the ravine carved by the Umzimkulwana River is a delight for nature lovers. The impressive gorge is 24 kilometres long, up to 5 kilometres wide and 300 metres deep.
The reserve has a small rest camp with eight huts perched on the southern rim of the chasm. There is a scenic circular drive, three walking trails and many beautiful picnic spots along the river.
Small, forest-dwelling animals like bushbuck, duiker, samango monkey and leopard occur in the dense forest, which comprises some 500 different tree species.
