The third-largest port and fifth-largest city in the country, Port Elizabeth faces east across the 60-kilometre wide sweep of Algoa Bay. Many of its attractions are concentrated along the seafront. Modern Port Elizabeth has spread inland an northward along the coast from the original settlement.
It is often referred to as the Friendly City and its wide open beaches are popular with visitors. Among the many attractions in this major tourist centre are a host of well-preserved historic buildings, splendid architecture, Bayworld, Snake Park, Donkin Reserve, and Happy Valley.
Protea Hotel Edward, well-preserved Edwardian building, is a city landmark, located in the heart of Port Elizabeth’s historical district. The hotel is renowned for its sumptuous breakfast and has a vintage lift that is still fully operational.
