Situated on a hilly peninsula on the south side of Hong Kong Island, this 80-hectare park is a world-class combination oceanarium, zoo, and amusement park and one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions. Each year, four million people visit. The park is sectioned into a number of themed areas linked by paths and a spectacular mile-long cable-car ride.
Entering the park at the Lowland, you come to a cocoon-shaped Butterfly House, aflutter with thousands of techni-colour butterflies. Nearby is an equally colourful Goldfish Pagoda, full of daring, bug-eyed Chinese and Japanese goldfish. At Dinosaurs-Now and Then you can check out the living descendents of dinosaurs inside three glass pyramids, including the endangered Chinese alligator and the Chinese giant salamander.
Amazing Amazon, an impressive trek through the simulated wilds of South America, with macaws, toucans, and flamingoes. Amazing Amazon also houses the Caverns of Darkness, a 3-D mock-up of an ancient South American temple, and the Amazing Birds Show, where parrots, hawks, owls, and ibises show off their natural behaviour with various tricks.
