Tehran is Iran’s capital and largest city, with an estimation population of 13,500,000. It is also Iran’s industrial centre, home to three-forth of the country’s industries. It is a modern city, filled with block after block of high-rise apartment and office buildings. Only in the southern district, where poor people live, you find one-storey, dilapidated huts.
Tehran was founded in the 1000s. In the 1500s, a fortified wall and a citadel were built for protection. The city became Iran’s capital in the late 1700s. In the early 1900s, most of the old wall was destroyed to make way for a grid of wide avenues. Today, Tehran sprawls over more than 600 square kilometres. Its main tourist attractions include the Azadi Tower and the National Jewels Museum, where you can see the gem-covered Peacock Throne.
