The city of Basra was founded in 636. Today, it is the third-largest city in Iraq with a population of 1,400,000.
Basra is located along the banks of the Shatt al-Arab at an elevation of 2 metres above sea level. The average January temperature is 12C, while the average July temperature is a stifling 36C. The city is located in the centre of a fertile agricultural area.
