Details / Launceston
Situated at the head of the idyllic Tamar River, surrounded by a rich agricultural area, Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city (population: 99,675) and the commercial centre of almost half of the state.
Launceston, with a population of about 100,000 has plenty to offer including cultural and sporting venues, interesting country towns nearby, historical buildings and the natural bushland setting of the cataract gorge virtually in the city.
A 10-minute walk from the town, there are two recreation areas, Cataract Gorge and Cliff Gardens, linked by a chairlift spanning the surging waters of the South Esk River.
Another popular attraction is the Penny Royal Mills complex. These watermills from the early 19th century have been converted into two comfortable motels and an entertainment centre, connected by a vintage tramway. Launceston also has a number of active wool mills with a range of fine products for sale of the public.
One of the most popular attractions of a visit to Launceston is driving along the Wine Route, visiting the boutique vineyards that since the 1970s have produced some of Australia’s finest vintages. A round-trip of about 65 km skirts one side of the Tamar River to reach the futuristic Batman Bridge, then returns by the other side through scenic orchard country.
