Details / Church of St. Ignatius
The twin-towered Jesuit church of St Ignatius (Ignatiuskirche), nearby the Parish Church of Mariä Himmelfahrt in Linz, until 1909 the Cathedral, is an aiseless church richly decorated by Italian artists (1669-78). The church was dedicated to St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit order.
The Ignatiuskirche is still known as the Alter Dom and is the largest Baroque church in the city although it is no longer the cathedral of Linz.
The organ, on which Bruckner played, has become known as the "Bruckner Organ". The pulpit dates from 1678 and the high altar from 1683. Depicting grotesque human and animal figures and strange dwarfs, teher is also richly carved choir stalls (1633).
The interior has the usual Baroque excesses - pink marble columns, intricately carved pulpit, lots of statues. The high altar by by Colomba and Barberini overflows with marble sculptures; the altar painting is by Antonio Bellucci. The carved choir stalls are from the former monastery in Garsten.
