Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. With its world famous baroque architecture, one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps, it is "Old Town". Salzburg was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. It is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting for parts of the musical and famous for "The Sound of Music”. The Alpines add to the beauty of the city. The population is about 210,000 as of 2007 census.
The city's attractions, loved by millions of visitors from all over the World starving for Salzburg sightseeing, are dreaming spires, green hills and romantic gardens. the city is among the busiest places of Europe all year round with a tourist-per-capita ratio higher than Venice or Florence.
With the number of tourists outnumbering locals by a large margin in peak times, Salzburg is a tourist favourite. In addition to Mozart's Birthplace noted above, other notable places include the Salzburg Cathedral, the fortress Hohensalzburg on a hill dominating the old town, the Franziskanerchurch, the St.Peter cemetery, the Nonnberg Abbey a Benedictine monastery, the "Residenz" Palace, Mozart's Residence, the University Church, the Siegmundstor, and the Getreidegasse.
