Details / Jesuitenkirche

Although the interior is exceptionally affluent with substitute marble pillars, gilding and a number of allegorical ceiling frescoes, its exterior is relatively strict. The semicircular vault ceiling inside the church was divided in four bays with paintings in perspective, using illusionary techniques. Executed by Andrea Pozzo in 1703, the remarkable trompe l'oeil dome, painted on a flat part of the ceiling, is a real extraordinary work of art.
This Baroque-styled Roman Catholic Church is certainly one of Vienna's most adorned in decor. The pulpit features the Apostle Matthew in amazingly beautiful detail, the sanctuary is decorated with marble columns, complicated sculpted pews, and a fascinating domed and painted ceiling.
