Wels, situated in the heart of Upper Austria at an elevation of 317 meters, has a population of 60,000. The city is two hundred kilometers west of Vienna, thirty-two south-west of Linz and about one hundred kilometers north-east of Salzburg. The town lies on the main railway, which connects Salzburg with Linz and the Westbahnhof of Vienna. Also there are many bus lines from Wels, going into the surrounding hills and valleys. Having various attractions in itself, the prosper town since Roman times is situated on the left bank of the Traun River .
The city is a real jewel and attraction for both old and young. Feel its charm, when walking through the city centre, with its historical town houses, former romantic courtyards. There is a variety of shops and afterwards the pleasant scene of restaurants, pubs, coffee-houses and wine bars. Wels offers also a small attractive zoo located near the city centre.
Wels is the city of unlimited activities offering the annual International Puppet Festival, many concerts with international and folk music stars, and the International Agricultural Fair and the Solar Energy Fair.
The Benedictine abbey, located in Lambach, sixteen kilometers southwest of Wels, is one of the sights in the surrounding area that should not be missed. This abbey lies on the Market Square of the old market town. In the ringing chamber, there are the main attractions, namely Romanesque frescoes from the eleventh century. The site of interest is the affluently decorated library and the splendid refectory from the eighteenth century. There is also the only survived monastic theatre in Austria which dates back to 1770.
