Cannes is a city in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in southeastern France. It has an estimated population of 70,400 according to the 2007 census. Cannes is the home of numerous luxurious houses and mansions as well as many high-end gated communities.
Being a picturesque city, Cannes is the "star" of the French Riviera and it is famous for the International Film Festival. It is well known for this Cannes Film Festival that takes place each May. Cannes is also a very popular tourist destination in Europe offering visitors great weather, many interesting tourist attractions, museums and some beautiful Mediterranean beaches. Popular activities in this fashionable resort community include sailing, swimming, shopping and attending the many visual and performing art events that are held at the Festival and Congress Centre each year.
Cannes is situated on a large bay welcoming sailboats and yachts from around the Mediterranean. It is also located on the main railway line that runs from Marseille to Nice, Monte Carlo and into Italy. Cannes France is conveniently located near the Nice International Airport.
The city is also famous for its various luxury stores, fancy restaurants, and prestigious hotels. The Boulevard de la Croisette, Cannes' most famous avenue, is the place to see and be seen. Here, bars and luxury hotels line the street where people lounge with their cocktails.
There are lots of places not to be missed on your trip. La Croisette is the waterfront avenue with palm trees. La Croisette is known for picturesque beaches and for restaurants, cafés and boutiques. La Suquet, the old town, provides a good view of La Croisette. The fortified tower and Chapel of St Anne house the Musée de la Castre. The Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned on the Îles de Lérins.
