Grenoble, located in the Rhône-Alpes région, is a city and commune in south-east France. Being situated at the foot of the Alps where the Drac joins the Isère River, Grenoble is the capital of the département of Isère. It is because of the proximity of the mountains which makes the city named "Capital of Alps" by french people. The population of the city of Grenoble at the 1999 census was 153,317 inhabitants and around 157,900 inhabitants estimated as of February 2004. The population of the whole metropolitan area at the 1999 census was 514,559 inhabitants and 560,222 inhabitants at the 2007 estimate.
Grenoble is referred to as the intellectual and economic capital of the Alps. The scenic city is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. An old French city, but with modern attitudes surrounded by the French Alps. The city has modern shops and broad boulevards that offer a different experience for the tourists. It's a city surrounded by mountains. To the north, Chartreuse; to the west, the Vercors and to the east the Belledonne Range surround Grenoble. Known as the “capital of the Alps”, Grenoble is situated in the Isère valley and is one of the best sun traps in France, with an impressive 2,000 hours of sunshine each year.
