Montpellier, a city in the south of France, is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon région, as well as the préfecture of the Hérault département. The population of the city of Montpellier at the 1999 census was 225,300, whereas the whole metropolitan area had a population of 459,916 in 1999. In 2004, it was estimated that the population of the city of Montpellier had reached 244,700 and in 2007, the estimated population of the metropolitan area was 531,000. Montpellier is one of the few cities in France without a Roman background.
Montpellier, France is a bustling and vibrant city in the South of France often overshadowed by neighboring cities in Provence,but it is well worthy of a visit. The city is beautiful, filled with architecture and rich in history. It's lined with boutiques and sidewalk cafes, and dotted with magnificent squares.
Main sights are mainly Place de la Comédie, the Musée Fabre, botanical garden, Saint Pierre Cathedral, the Porte du Peyrou, the Saint Clément Aqueduct.
The Festival de Radio France et Montpellier is a summer festival of opera and music held in Montpellier. The music festival concentrates on classical music and jazz with about 100 events, including opera, concerts, films, and talks. Most of these events are free and are held in the historic courtyards of the city or the modern concert halls of Le Corum.
There is no shortage of attractions in Montpellier, whether you love all things historic or you like a vibrant urban setting. One of the top Montpellier attractions is Place de la Comedie, the heart of the city and lined with cafes and shopping. This is also home to markets, and you must see the Opera and the Three Graces statue. Another one is the Faculty of Medicine that is established in the 12th century and the oldest medical school in the occidental world still in operation. La Promenade Royale du Peyrou, a park and oasis from the bustle of the city, can be also considered as of Montpellier atrractions.
