Mulhouse, located in the southern part of the Alsace region, close to the French borders with Germany and Switzerland, Mulhouse is a city steeped in history and one where visitors can immerse themselves in cultural heritage that stretches back to medieval times and beyond. With 271,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area in 2007 it is the largest city in the Haut-Rhin department, and the second largest in the Alsace region after Strasbourg.
Mulhouse provides to visitors of all ages and backgrounds, and families with children are just as likely to find things to entertain themselves as culture-seeking individual travellers. The city’s zoo and botanical garden is one of the most popular attractions, offering widespread appeal across its visitor base, while outdoor activities such as go-karting, horseback riding and cycling are also good all-rounders.
It’s also a city with plenty to please the eye, from picturesque cobbled streets to well preserved architectural treasures. For culture, the city has a highly magnificent selection of museums covering a broad range of topics. The Automobile Museum is a must for car enthusiasts, while the enchanting Francais du Chemin de Fer Museum, the national rail museum, is a delight for train-spotters. Art enthusiasts will find both the Bartholdi Museum and the Mulhouse Fine Arts Museum of interest.
Principal places of interest are Hôtel de Ville, known for its trompe l'oeil paintings, and its pictures of allegories representing the vices and virtues, Workers' quarter, Place de la Bourse and the building of the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse, Musée National de l'Automobile de Mulhouse, French National Railway Museum, Museum of Electricity, Museum of Printed Textiles, botanical gardens and zoo.
