The Hôtel de Ville, the building housing the City of Paris's administration in Paris, France, stands on the place de l'Hôtel de Ville in the city's IVe arrondissement, it has been the location of the municipality of Paris since 1357. It serves multiple functions, housing the local administration, the Mayor of Paris, and also being a venue for large receptions.
The Hôtel de Ville, the beautiful building, serving as Paris City Hall, is a 19th century reconstruction of the 17th century town hall that was burned to the ground during the Commune of 1871. The building overlooks a fascinating pedestrian square, a nice place to walk and a nice place to skate in winter when a ice-skating rink is to be found here. The square was once a site for public executions.
The Hôtel de Ville, Paris's city hall, is the center of political Paris. Like Paris, it has been through some turbulent times. Architects Théodore Ballu and Pierre Deperthes, following an architectural contest, directed the reconstruction of the building. They rebuilt the interior of the Hôtel de Ville within the stone shell that had survived the fire. The building is decorated with 108 statues, representing famous Parisians. 30 Other statues represent French cities. The clock at the central tower is decorated with several feminine sculptures representing the Seine River, the city of Paris, 'Work' and 'Education'.
