Rouen is the historical capital city of Normandy. The city is presently the capital of the Haute-Normandie region, in northwestern France on the River Seine, approximately 90 minutes drive north-west (135 km) from the centre of Paris . There was a time when, Rouen was one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe. The total land area covered by the city is 21.38 square kilometer. The population of the city is around 110,000 and its metropolitan area includes some 520,000 inhabitants.
Not to be missed are as walking through Rouen, past half timbered houses, discovering architectural treasures such as the Gothic monuments like the Notre Dame Cathedral, St Ouen Abbey, Saint Maclou Church and the Palais de Justice or Renaissance style monuments like the Gros Horloge, Saint Maclou Ossuary and the Bourgtheroulde Mansion. The city has also a lot to offer its tourists. Some popular places of attractions of Rouen are Rue du Gros-Horloge, Musee de la Ceramique (Ceramics Museum), Place du Vieux-Marche, Aitre St-Maclou, Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Musee Le Secq des Tournelles. The city is known for its Notre Dame Cathedral. The city, also known as the ‘Ville aux cent clochers’ dear to Victor Hugo, has preserved much of it’s historical center which is now largely composed of pedestrian streets and walkways.
