Fuggerei is the oldest social settlement in tthe world. This is another "city" in the city, which has eight roads, three doorways, it's own church and city walls. This little "city" was founded in 1521 by Jakob Fugger as a residential subdivision for some allowed Augsburg citizens which has not enough money to settle a house.
The Fuggerei was built between the years 1514 and 1523 by Thomas Krebs. The St. Markus Church in Fuggerei was built by Hans Holl in 1582. Between the years 1880 and 1938 some extensions had been added to this settlement. In World War II the settlement was mostly damaged by Royal Air Force of Britain.
Today the Fuggerei has 140 apartments which are about 60 m². The apartments on the gorund floor have gardens . Today about 150 people, which are married, born in Augsburg, Catholic and in financial distress, live here in the Fuggerei.
The Fuggerei restored after World War II is still a medieval town with it's tiny houses, gates and walls surrounding it. The houeses still have the original bells, which are chains with metal hand-grips. Each of them has different shapes, so that it would be easy for the residents to find their own home. The rent here is 1 dollar for a year; the rent has always been about the same amount since this settlement was built. No cars are allowed on the roads of Fuggerei.
This place is one of the most imporant attractions in Augsburg that is suggested for tourists to visit.
There is not any kind of review about "Fuggerei".
