The Perlach Tower (German: Perlachturm) is an ancient building which was built as a watch tower with a height of 30 meters in 989, in order to watch out for fires and intruders.
In year 1348 a firebell was installed to the tower, so that it was possible to warn people against the dangers. Since year 1805 only one aristocratic officer was allowed to ring the bell.
Until year 1526, about five hundred years, the Perlach Tower was unaltered. In year 1526 the height of the tower was increased to 63 meters. A few years later a clock was installed to the tower.
The tower obtained it's today's appearance between the years 1612 and 1618. While the City Hall was being built, the Perlach Tower has been redesigned by the famous Architect Elias Holl.
In the World War II, in year 1944 the tower was damagede by the bombs of Royal Air Force. After 6 years of renovation in 1950 the tower was reopened.
