Cologne Cathedral, which is dedicated to the saints Peter and Mary, is one of the greatest cathedrals of Germany designed in a gothic architecture. It is the most remarkable landmark of the city Cologne. Besides being the one of the world's largest churches it is the largest church in North Europe. This famous church is now a World Heritage Site.
The construction of this great building began in 1248 and it lasted until (1880), about 6 centuries to complete this huge church. With a height of 157 meters it used to be the tallest building between the years 1880 and 1884, till the Washington Monument was built.
The Cologne Cathedral, which is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple, which was built in 4th century. This important building was damaged during the World War II with 14 hits. The reconstruction was complete in year 1956. After then in year 1996 it has become a World Heritage, chosen by UNESCO.
Except the steel roof the Cologne Cathedral has a pure medieval architecture. Although it is not the tallest building in the world today, it is still the largest church facade. There are usually renovation works in progress because of natural factors like rain and wind. The church is decorated with jewels and silver, there are many precious artworks in the church.
If you ever visit Cologne, Cologne Cathedral is at the top of the list of places to visit. You can visit the church between 6am and 7:30pm for free(if you want to visit the tower and cathedral it costs about 5 euros). There are many guided tours in English.
