The Römer is a medieval structure consists of eleven seperate buildings, which were built between the 15th and 18th centuries. It includes the Old Town Hall , called "Altes Rathaus" in German, too.
The building in the center of the three major buildings is the Haus Römer. A merchant Family, Römer, sold it to the city council with other buildings. Since then the Römer has been used for many different aims like wedding halls, civil registration office etc. The structure has been non-stop extended and it has now totally eleven buildings, which all are confusingly connected to each other.
With all the extensions the complete structure is about 10,000 square meters, has nine houses and six courtyards. There are two halls which are the oldest remaining rooms here. They have not been changed almost for 600 years. They are called Römerhalle and Schwanenhalle, which are placed on the ground floor. But the most famous room is the Kaisersaal, which can be called Emperor Hall, which is placed on the first floor.
If you visit Frankfurt this ancient building is the most important landmark of Frankfurt that you should see. The labyrinth-like connections of eleven buildings are very interesting to observe.
