The Botanical Garden in Göttingen belongs to Georgia Augusta University is built on the old botanic garden, which was founded by Albrecht von Haller in year 1736. The garden consists of two departmens; Systematical Department (the old garden) and Geobotanical Department (the new garden). The old garden occupies an area of 5 hectares and it has 10,000 species of plants.
Some areas of the garden remained almost untouched for a century. Thus in these areas you can see a wild garden faune which includes insects, amphibians, birds etc.. There are also eight greenhouses open for public, which has plants from tropical rain forests, arids etc.. Two of the houses are used for winter plants. Others used for tropical and european wild plants.
In year 1967 the New Botanic Garden was founded as Prof. Heinz Ellenberg was in need of more space for his experiments. Here you can find forest communites rom Europe, America and Asia. The garden occupies an area of 5,000 square meters. There is also the Forstbotanischer Garden, which has a collection of woody plants and perennials, near to the New Botanic Garden.
For those who loves to be in nature this is an great oppurtunity to refresh yourself and have a rest in a green area. You can observe many kinds of plants.
