There are five major Protestant churches in Hamburg. St. Michaelis is the most famous of them in Hamburg. It is a remarkable landmark of the city which is dedicated to the Michael, the archangel. There is a big statue on the portal which representing the archangel defeating the devil. The 132 meters high tower with baroque style covered with copper has been a remarkable landmark of Hamburg's skyline.
The current church is the one built for third time on the same area. The first one was built in year 1647 which took 22 years until 1669. This church was destroyed surprisingly by a lightning strike in year 1750. After then in year 1786 the second church was built which was designed by Johann Leonhard Prey and Ernst Georg Sonnin. It had the same design with the current church, which was reconstructed in 1980s after the being destroyed by World War II.
