Hamburg, located on the River Elbe, is a very big harbour in Europe; it is the second largest harbour of the Europe and ninth largest on the world, called "Gateway to the World". Hamburg is a very important place for economy and trade because of it's enourmus port. The harbour occupies an area of 74,00 squad kilometers. The branching shape of River Elbe creates a very good area for building a port here. A new city quarter is being built called HafenCity on the north of the harbour.
The port was founded in year 1189 by Frederick I, who realized the strategic importance of the area. Since then it has been one of the major harbour of Europe, which enabled Hamburg to develope into a trade center in Europe. The port also enables passenger and freight travel since 1800's.
