Details / Skopelos
Possessing one of the most beautiful ports in Greece at Skopelos town, Skopelos is densely vegetated, with pine forests sweeping down to secluded coves. Fruit and nut orchards fill its interior.
Agios Athanasios church lies within the sturdy walls of the Venetian fortress, which stands above the harbour on the site of a temple to Athena. Outside Skopelos town there is only one main road, but many paths lead to other resorts and villages.
In the hills east of the town are five monasteries and convents, three of them open to visitors. The nuns at Evangelistria sell their own handicrafts in a small gift shop, while the monastery of Metamorphosis has reopened after restoration by the monks. The convent of Prodromos looks across the Aegean to Alonissos.
