Details / Thassos
Attracted by Thassos’ pine covered mountains, beaches, and ancient remains, Greek vacationers have flocked to the island for years. Hikers love the remote north coast. In more recent times, overseas travelers have discovered its charms, thanks to the convenience of the Thessaloniki airport.
Out of high season Thassos town is a pleasant place to stay, with added interest provided by the Roman remains scattered about. Because it is close to the mainland, Thassos was inhabited as long ago as the Stone Age.
The most extensive area of surviving Roman buildings is the agora. It is fenced off and not officially open, but if the gate is unlocked no one minds if you wander through and take a look. With a little imagination and a good map, available locally, you can make out the remains of shops and the foundations of temples and other public buildings.
