Details / Parnassos Mountains
Behind Delphi rise the dramatic Parnassos Mountains. Their highest point is the 2,457-metre peak of Mount Liakoura, or Wolf Mountain. The roads make the top easily accessible, and skiers, hikers, and mountain bikers now flock here.
Much of the area is protected as Parnassos National Park, established in 1938. This makes it one of the first national parks in Europe and, with the one around Mount Olympus, the oldest in Greece. It is dominated by forested slopes of Cephalonian fir.
Despite being just 12 kilometres from Delphi, and right on the main road, delightful mountain village of Arachova is little affected by tourism. Beyond the souvenir shops lining the main road the traditional life of Arachova goes on, as you will see if you spend a night of two there and join the local people in their evening vola, or watch the men packing into the cafes in the early evening to loudly discuss everything under the sun.
