Crete is more a country than an island, and its patriotic citizens will proudly announce that they are Cretans first, Greeks second. It is awesome in its beauty, with high mountain ranges and a character of fierce independence.
Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It is a long, thin island, 250 km from one end to the other, yet at its narrowest only 12 km wide. Within its shores are high mountain ranges, the longest gorge in Europe, hundreds of excellent beaches, and one of Greece’s most significant ancient sites: Knossos.
Crete leaves an indelible impression, no matter what time of year. Hania is one of the most charming towns anywhere in the Aegean, with its backdrop of the White Mountains.
