Details / Hania
![]() |
The main city in western Crete, Hania is one of the most appealing towns on the island. its perfect setting, lively harbour, historical remains, busy market, interesting museums, and nearby beaches make it the ideal spot. It retains its unique charm and character no matter how many visitors pack into the streets.
Parts of the waterfront are lined with tall mansions, creating an effect not unlike that of Venice. It was an important Minoan city, but one that is relatively unknown, as the modern city has been added layer after layer on top of the Minoan remains.
Archaeological Museum is rich in artefacts from other sites in western Crete. It has a fine pottery collection and several superb sculptures and mosaics. The building is itself of interest, although the outside belies the interior. It was once the Venetian Church and later converted into a mosque by the Turks.
