The Archaeological Museum is one of Iraklio’s undoubted highlights. Rich finds have been made all over this large and historically important island, and most of them have ended up on display here. The result is an immense, outstanding collection that warrants plenty of your time, maybe even two short visits instead of one longer one.

The rooms are arranged in roughly chronological order, and good guides and maps are on sale at the entrance.

The museum is close to Liberty Square very much the heart of Iraklio. The square comes alive in the evenings, when the bars and restaurants open and half the city seems to congregate here for the evening volta.
