![]() |
Evia is Greece’s second largest island after Crete, separated from the mainland by just a narrow channel. Its size makes for great diversity, from the busy capital of Halkida to remote mountain villages.
Although Evia is an island, it is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Like Crete, it has a distinctive feel to it, as if set slightly apart from the rest of Greece. Some parts have been influenced by Albania and others by Turkey.
Like Crete, Evia is a long, thin, mountainous island. It measures 175 km from one end to the other. It extremely fertile, filled with woods, orchards, olive groves, and vineyard. There is good grazing too, and in fact the original Greek name of the island is Euboea, which translates as rich in cattle.
