Details / Kavala
![]() |
The port of Kavala is recognizably Greek and, with its harbour, fortress, and seafront restaurants, could be in almost any part of the country.
This very lively port is a gateway to the islands of the northern Aegean and northern Dodecanesse. A popular resort with good beaches either side of the centre, it has interesting museums illustrating the historical and cultural interest of he town and surrounding area.
Kavala has been a port since ancient times, and was founded as long ago as the sixth century BC by emigrants from the island of Paros. The most notable building, known as the Imaret, overlooks the harbour on the right-hand side of one of the main streets as you enter the citadel area. This is the largest Islamic building in Europe and was founded by Mehmet Ali.
