Details / Prespa Lakes
The borders of Albania, Greece, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia meet in the waters of the larger of the two Prespa lakes, Megali Prespa. Mikri Prespa is divided between Greece and Albania. This frontier land, perched in the remote northwest corner of Greece, feels untouched by the modern world. The lakes’ inaccessibility has made them a haven for wildlife.
Tourists may have been restricted, but tat restriction has never applied to the wildlife, and Prespa National Park is a vital European breeding ground for many species.
Rare Dalmatian pelicans, of which there are only about 300 breeding pairs remaining in Greece, nest here in the Prespa lakes, although they may fly farther south to the island of Corfu if winter in the mountains is particularly hard and long.
