Details / Ancient Sikyon
Ancient Sikyon, known as the City of Pumpkin because of the plump terracotta pottery once produced here, is 6 kilometres south of Kiato. Founded in the second millennium BC by the Ionians and later conquered by the Dorians, it became an important cultural centre focusing on was painting, sculpture and pottery. It suffered at the hands of numerous invaders before it was finally destroyed by an earthquake in AD 23. the only obvious remains are those of a partially preserved gymnasium from Hellenistic and Roman times and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis.
The site’s museum, housed in restored Roman baths, contains vases from various periods, terracotta statuettes from Archaic to Roman times, and a Praxiteles-styled marble head of Apollo. The site is opposite the museum; admission is free.
