Details / Ancient Troizen
The remains of ancient Troizen lie scattered across a hillside near the modern village of Trizina, 45 kilometres southeast of Ligourio.
Troizen’s main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the mythical hero Theseus, who went on slay the Minotaur and become king of Athens. The myth suggests that Troizen was one of the few coastal cities in the Peloponnese where Ionian traditions continued after the arrival of Dorians, for Theseus was an Ionian hero.
The ruin’s themselves do not amount to much more than a good excuse going for a walk. The principal feature is the foundations of the Sanctuary of Hippolytos, a large temple built in the fourth century BC – and destroyed by an eruption on Methana the following century. It stands on a wide terrace and overlooks the remains of the asklepion. A section of the third century BC city wall remains intact, together with a square defensive tower.
