Details / Megalopoli
Despite its name, there is little remained of Megalopoly to reflect its former grandeur. The modern town is no more than a dull service centre that has grown up to feed and house workers at the enormous power station just north of town.
The ruins of the ancient city begin about one kilometres north of the modern town, on the road to Karitena. It must have been an idyllic spot in ancient times, nestled in a leafy valley on the banks of the Elisson River. These days, it stands almost in the shadow of the power station and giant smokestacks fill the sky with columns of thick, grey smoke.
The only feature worth stopping to check out more closely is the ancient theatre, which is signposted to the south of the Megalopoli-Karitena road. This suitably mega structure was excavated out of the slope of a low hill on the western bank of the River Elisson.
