Details / Menelaion
Some archaeologists believe that the Menelaion, southeast of Sparta, marks the site of the Mycenaean city ruled by King Menelaus. No evidence has yet been uncovered to support this view, although finds indicate that the site has been occupied since Neolithic times.
The Menelaion is a small, crumbling, pyramid structure that stands at the tip a steep spur that overlooks the Evrotas Valley from the east. Built in the classical period, it was part of a sanctuary to Menelaus and Helen, whose face launched a thousand ships.
Although the site is close to Sparta as the crow flies, it is a fair way by road. Head north from Sparta and turn right immediately after the bridge across the River Evrotas, then take the road running south along the east bank of the river. The Menelaion is signposted to the left after about 4 kilometres.
