Details / Methana Peninsula
The Methana Peninsula bulges out into the Saronic Gulf about 40 kilometres east of Ligourio, forming the eastern flank of the Gulf of Epidavros. It is virtually an island, connected to the mainland only by a narrow, swampy isthmus.
The air around the peninsula is dominated by the smell of sulphur that emanates from hot springs on the east coast. This betrays the area’s volcanic origins; the old crater is at the north-western tip of the peninsula.
The main town and port, also called Methana, is on the east coast. The sparse ruins of ancient Methana can be seen below the village of Megalohori. A road continues from here to Kameini Hora on the slopes of the volcano. A very rough path leads from here to the crater.
