Miskolc is a city in North-East Hungary, mainly having heavy industrial background. Miskolc is the third-largest city of Hungary after Budapest and Debrecen with a population close to 180,000 (2001) and second-largest with agglomeration. It is also the county capital of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and the regional centre of Northern Hungary. Miskolc lies at the meeting point of different geographical region. The city has a total area of 236.68 km² according to the 2001 Census.
Although Miskolc is generally thought of as an industrial city, and the largest boost to its economy was indeed provided by the industrialization during the Socialist era, in fact industry which includes metallurgy has a long history in the city.
The places to visit are the Main Street and City Hall Square with the atmosphere of Hungarian towns of the 19th century, Gothic Protestant Church of the Avas Hill, Greek Orthodox Church with the largest iconostasis in Central Europe, House of Arts with two art cinemas, Kós House, Mindszent Church, Minorite Church and Heroes' Square, Miskolc-Avas TV Tower, National Theatre of Miskolc, Ottó Herman Museum, Palace of Music, and Wooden Church.
Miskolc is a unique holiday resort of Europe, a wonder produced by nature. There is the Tapolca primeval park consisting of the unparalelled cave bath, the open-air bath of a vast water surface and the rowing lake. The evaporating, warm, medicinal water of the cave bath with the crystal-clear air have a beneficial effect on the respiratory tracts. Tapolca is an ideal venue for holiday makers in all seasons.
