Details / Cefalu
Cefalu has largely escaped the modern building that has done so much to spoil Sicily’s coastline. Charming and compact, this immediately likeable town, built below an immense crag, has several pleasant beaches, one of Sicily’s loveliest main squares, and a Norman cathedral graced with one of the most sublime images of Christ in Western art.
The town’s charm and fine beach mean that it has become increasingly popular, so you will need to reserve accommodations in summer. Nightlife, shopping, and eating are also good here, but the commercialism has not spoiled the town, whose central medieval streets remain pretty and romantic places to stroll.
A walk to the crag, or Rocca, the site of the old citadel, offers superb views. Allow about 40 minutes and 20 minutes to reach the so-called Temple of Diana en route, a fifth century BC building of unknown purpose.
