Details / Isole Pelagie
The Isole Pelagie take their name from the Greek pelagia, or sea islands, and consist of three tiny scraps of land- Lampedusa, Linosa, and uninhabited Lampione. Closer in fact and feel to Africa than Europe, they have little to see, but are becoming increasing popular among visitors keen to dive, swim, and snorkel in their pristine waters.
Lampedusa town is the main settlement, minutes from the small airport and ferry terminal, and the place to stay – possibly in a rented dammuso, one of the traditional Arab-style domed houses. It is also the place to rent bikes, scooters, cars, scuba, and other equipment.
The best beaches are all on the southern coast, the northern coast being a series of spectacular cliffs best seen on one of the highly recommended boat tours from town.
