Details / Jordaan
The Joordan is the area located at the west side of the grachtengordel, main canals. It was founded in 1612 as a discrict for the working class and emigrants. The population has increased as time goes by, enormously, due to political refugees. Today, the Jordaan is one of most wanted locations in the Netherlands.
The name of Joordan comes from the river Jordaan; however there is some other theories about this. It is predicted that the name can be a derivation of the French name jardin which means garden. Most streets and canals are named after trees and flowers in the Jordaan.
The Joordan is a pleasant place with a mixture of all kinds of styles and activities. While it was a district for the poors, today it is a favorite place for students, artists, and young people. There are many sights worth seeing. Anne Frank House, Theo Thijssen Museum, Pianolamuseum, The Northernchurch, and Houseboatmuseum should not be missed.
