Lelystad is the capital of the province of Flevoland.It was named after
Cornelis Lely, an engineer-statesman who designed the Zuiderzee reclamation project. It became the capital of the newly created Flevoland province in 1986. The city is approximately 5 meters below sea. So, large part of are is water.
Lelystad has boats, a small fishing harbour have access to Amsterdam through the Oostvaarder Canal. Several inland canals on the polder supply water for the surrounding agricultural area, where flowers, cereals, apples, and dairy cattle are raised. The town has five residential areas that are distincted from each other by parks, and industrial zones are located on its periphery.
The city has a inernational famous nature park of the city called Ooastvaardersplassen, and national Airport Schiphol.
