Details / Inverness Museum and Art Gallery
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, situated at the foot of the Castle Hill, was founded on its current site in 1880. It is history and heritage in the Capital of the Highlands. It was extensively renovated in 2006 and now offers a range of new displays, visitor facilities and stunning exhibitions on geology. It's well worth a visit to really connect with the heritage of the Highlands.
The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery focuses on natural history, archaeology and local history detailing the lives and times of the Highland region. Pictish stones, Highland wildlife, Jacobite memorabilia, Highland silver and costumes are included.
The permanent exhibition on the ground floor investigates the effects of human activity on the Highlands, including hunting, shooting and fishing, farming, croft living and town life. Artefacts such as the 6th-century Pictish carved stone, nicknamed the Ardross Wolf, bring thousands of years of history alive. The displays continue on the first floor with the more recent history of the Highlands. The first floor exhibition area also features a changing programme of temporary exhibitions. There is a cafe and gift shop.
The art gallery offers a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions that explores art both historical, such as 300 years of Inverness centred around paintings by JMW Turner, and contemporary.
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery has been awarded Accredited status under the Museum Accreditation Scheme run by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
